About the Choir
The Hythe Singers is a small and enthusiastic group of amateur singers. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings during term time, from 7:30pm – 9:45pm, at St. Jude’s Junior School in Englefield Green. We give three concerts a year.
We perform a wide and varied repertoire, from arrangements of popular songs to music by classical composers from the 12th to the 21st century. You can hear some of our favourite pieces recorded before and during Lockdown on our YouTube channel.
We also sing choral evensong on an occasional basis (most recently at All Saints Church, Marlow, a week’s summer residency at St. David’s Cathedral in Wales, and our third weekend at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor).
In recent years, the choir has performed and commissioned a number of works by young contemporary composers, mostly for unaccompanied voices.
In rehearsals we work hard, paying attention to detail and developing our vocal technique. But we also have fun (and tea and biscuits). We want everyone to enjoy the experience of singing together whilst achieving a high standard.

Musical Direction
Our musical director, Richard Harker, is also musical director of Hampton Choral Society, Henley Choral Society, Parenthesis and a Henley Youth Choir. He is a Chorus Master at Opera Holland Park, and a classroom music teacher. Richard also works extensively as an organist and accompanist.
At Opera Holland Park Richard has worked on La Bohème, La Traviata, Eugene Onegin (Assistant Conductor & Chorus Master), Carmen, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte, Le Nozze di Figaro; Manon Lescaut and Un ballo in maschera (Chorus Master), Ruddigore and Pirates of Penzance (Chorus Master and Assistant Repetiteur). Other operatic engagements have included L’Elisir d’amore for West Green House Opera (Chorus Master), HMS Pinafore for Windsor and Eton Opera (Conductor), Terterian’s Fire Ring at the Grimeborn Festival with London Armenian Opera (Conductor), Schumann-devised opera Unknowing and Menotti’s The Telephone with Teatime Opera (Musical Director), and Jonathan Hervey’s Passion and Resurrection at the Voices of London Festival (Conductor).
Richard graduated with an MA in Choral Conducting from the Royal Academy of Music, receiving the Thomas Armstrong Prize. He read music at, and was organ scholar of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he received the Swinburne Prize.
